My First Post Revisited

Thank you Sara for tagging me! I’m always up for a tag, and this was simple enough. And also, a fun prompt for a reflection of seeing how far this particular blog has come since its beginnings.

The Rules for the #MyFirstPostRevisited Blog Hop

  1. No cheating. You must highlight your first post. Not your second post, not one you love… the first post only.
  2. Link back to the person who tagged you (thank them if you feel like it or, if not, curse them with a plague of ladybugs).
  3. Cut and paste your old post into a new post or reblog your own bad self. (Either way is fine, but NO editing.)
  4. Put the hashtag #MyFirstPostRevisited in your title.
  5. Tag five (5) other bloggers to take up this challenge.firstpost.jpg
  6. Notify your tags in the comment section of their blog (don’t just hope they notice a pingback somewhere in their spam).
  7. Feel free to cut and paste the badge to use in your post.
  8. Include “the rules” in your post.
  9. Completely silly rules that I’m making up as I type:
    • Write your post while wolfing down your favorite dessert.
    • Do 10 cartwheels after you hit “Publish.”

So, What Was My First Blog Post?

Truth be told, I had a number of posts prior to this first public one. Before I’m accused of breaking the rules, let me explain: I initially began this blog to post my stories in. The first posts here are story chapters, and they never went public to begin with (I was trying to find a template adaptable for a ToC). I had another blog, Read2Write, which was my main blog at that time. So why did I transfer and do the name switch? Because of the same conundrum I had there that I’m having here now: it became way too serious. I wanted to make a more personal blog. But I don’t want to use this space as a gripe zone. Hence, why I haven’t been posting as often.

I digress.

My very first post was something of a gripe, in any case: Hello world!

This is a combination of Ell’s Library (expositions on random topics), plus some of my Read2Write but a little more personal (minus the book reviews), and then a hodge podge of everything else. I wanted Read2Write to have a professional and helpful aspect, but in doing so, I have less to say there, because sometimes I’m just not feeling all that smart or helpful.

Also planning on putting up some writing here. Eventually, when I get around to actually writing. It’s been really hard to find the time lately. I’m either too pooped out when I finally do have the time by the end of the day, or there just isn’t time. I did read that the whole “settling in” theory is just a load of bologna, and I believe it. I’ve beat bad habits before in the past, and I know I have the self-control…most times.

It’s the darn AW forums that keep consuming my time. I’ll go through spurts of binge-reading and I don’t feel bad about divulging in that recreational activity. But otherwise, it’s the internet and the endless things I’d like to do in my free time, as minimal as it is oftentimes. I do a lot of traveling (driving), I have 2 children and 3 if you include hubby, I work part-time, I enjoy the art of cooking, I’ve put any artwork endeavors on indefinite hiatus because writing interests me more, and a number of pet projects in the mulling and brewing department. I read, I’m semi-active on Twitter, I enjoy reading my numerous how-to email subscriptions I get on a daily basis, and now that I wrote this all down, I believe I have way too many extracurricular activities on my plate that is taking away from my one main goal that I keep dancing around: writing.

I’m very literal, rather dull and definitely slow, but I love creating. I love writing. I do it for me.

Here are my goals for this month, aside from the personal stresses and life activities:

  1. Begin a new fanfiction. It’s a complete makeover of a FFIX fanfic I began writing a long long time ago and I felt the urge. What can I say? Fanfics are where I began. I wrote a FFVII fanfic and got to around 90k words, and it’s still incomplete. Of course it’s absolutely atrocious but it was a great achievement for the time being.
  2. Get this show (blog) on the road.
  3. CampNano? I joined for 10k word count for Parallax, my current WIP pet project. Due to the time of month though, I’m really nonvocal about it because I have #1 brewing in my mind. And I don’t feel like sharing.

I think I really ought to reassess where I’m spending my energies. I’m spread thin which is why I just can’t concentrate on one thing anymore for too long. That and my free time is minuscule, but I know the latter is no excuse.

Here’s to going for something different!

My goals are quite different from then, but the sentiments in the first half are generally the same!

Things that have changed, however: My commute is much longer (I don’t mind, since that’s the only alone time I get), but being a house owner, a homeschool teacher, and having added 4 felines to the household, my responsibilities are more so now than ever before. I’m no longer addicted to the AW forums, and art commissions are back on the table.

And no, I don’t read all my e-mail subscriptions anymore… who has the time!

But overall, I’m still spreading myself thin!

Rule #9a. I’m drinking my favorite tea from my favorite mug, does that count??

Rule #9b. Done!

Here are my nominees:

As always, nominees aren’t under any obligation!

    • So hard! I believe it’s a commonality among us creatives: all our interests and aspirations are linked in one way or another — and boy are there a lot of links! They all fuel each other, too. It’s a blessing to have so many outlets, but yet a curse because our goals are so many, and time is so lacking.

And yes, you should definitely do something like this for your blogiversary — or whenever you’d like to, you’re officially tagged!

  1. I’m noticing a common theme among everyone’s first posts so far: We all said, “Um, hi! Here’s my blog and what it’ll sort of be about. Come back soon for more stuff!” XD

I love how detailed your first post was, though. And how you shared specific goals that, while different from the ones you have now, are still in line with the pursuits you have right now. Art, writing, reading, creativity – that sounds like the Jessica I know. 🙂

I got the jist that FFIX stood for Final Fantasy IX. What about AW, though?

Isn’t it such a hard habit to break, spreading oneself too thin? I still have that problem now and then…

Thanks for taking up this tag, btw!

    • Thank You for tagging me! And yes, FFIX stands for the video game — one of my favorites! XII is my favorite 😉 AW stands for the forums of Absolute Write. I was forumming for quite some time coughmonthscough, and it sucked up all my time that I should’ve spent being productive. It was quite the addiction, and one I’m so glad to be rid of. It was justified for so long, because, well, it was about writing!

And yes, it was quite nice to see the growth since the time I started this blog, but yet managing to keep to the same theme. There’s just so much to do, so much we want to do… this is why I loathe the necessity of sleep! And oh my word, you definitely spread yourself thin, I don’t know how you manage it! And you get so much reading done on top of everything else that you accomplish! You’re truly the wonderwoman of time-management and productivity!

      • Ah, gotcha. I did some forumming in the past, too. Mostly for music groups I listened, but at one point a writing friend and I ran a writing critique forum, so I know what you’re talking about. Do forums still exist now? Or has social media replaced them for the most part? (Or, wait, is Reddit a forum?)

You loathe sleep? How?? *lol* I’m not the kind who sleeps in on weekends, but gosh do I appreciate a good night’s sleep. I don’t function or concentrate well if I don’t get enough over a few nights.

“You’re truly the wonderwoman of time-management and productivity!”

Um, er… thank you. xD I don’t always feel so productive. But there’s only so much that we can do because of other obligations, right? I actually feel the least spread thin that I’ve felt in a while. I think it’s because I’m more selective about what I do, and more mindful of what I have going on at any given time. So… um, yeah. *lol*

  2. This was so neat to read. And also makes to me terrified to look back and see what my first post was like. 😛 I’m so glad you’re still writing on this blog and I somehow found it, one day. It’s one of my favorites to read!

    • Aw, thank you! The sentiments are the same!! I was a bit worried to see my first post, too, but how bad could it be? It’s nice to see growth both intellectually and emotionally, but I’m glad that I’m still on the same page as when I began this blog. I’m sure seeing your first post will be an encouragement, too!

      • I did glance at my first post and it wasn’t nearly as bad as I thought (and I’m surprised to see some similarities I wasn’t expecting to how I still write now). I’m very excited to do this post, hopefully next week. But your blog is awesome and never forget that!

  3. Haha, I used to be addicted to AW too. Now I’ve replaced it with a Twitter addiction. Thanks for the nomination – I’ll definitely do this, though my first post was not nearly as long ago as yours. 🙂

    • The Twitter addiction is most assuredly easier to have than the aW addiction! It was like stepping into a time warp… and always the inevitable self-deprecating feeling of knowing that you probably should’ve been writing instead of forumming! Like you said in one of your recent blog posts… Twitter friends = lovely magical friends in your pocket! ❤

It took longer than I expected to find my first post… and I don't even blog as much as other blogging folks! Looking forward to seeing your first post!

      • I like that I’m more interactive on Twitter. I used to spend a great deal of time lurking on AW.

Hurrah for magical pocket friends! 🙂

  5. Hi there!
Sara nominated me for this blog hop too, so now I’m nosing around the other nominees’ blogs ;-P

I like the colloquial tone of your post. Compared to other first blogs I’ve seen, yours was already quite ‘professional’. I mean, you clearly knew what you were doing, contrary to so many of us 😉

    Great post. I enjoyed it.
