Liebstered, Take Two!

A month and a half later, I finally feel sprite enough to blog here. I was Liebstered by the lovable and talented Nicole from ThoughtsStainedWithInk. She is undoubtedly one of the most charming and warm-hearted people I’ve ever “met” online!

As a side note: Sorry for the extended absence; to make a long story short, I’ve just not been feeling it. I’ve been meandering through my editing and transfers, binging on reading, but not feeling motivated at all.

So here we go with the Liebster!

Here are the rules:
Share 11 facts about yourself.
Answer 11 questions from the blogger who nominated you.
Nominate up to 11 bloggers and write 11 questions for them to answer.
Bonus Rule, added by yours truly: wonder about the significance surrounding the number 11.

A bit hard to come up with some more facts about myself from the previous Liebster, but I will try!

  1. I am a cat person. But I am not addicted or drawn to kitten pictures. I love all animals, but cats are my familiar-of-choice.
  2. Final Fantasy XII is my favorite game story. IX and VII are my other two favorites. VIII and X, not so much. And this new XV? Ehhh…! Sims, well, that’s a given. Been playing that one since its inception 16 years ago D:
  3. Pierogies and mashed potatoes are my comfort foods. And mozzarella strings.
  4. Vodka is my drink of choice. It goes with everything (except milk. I hate milk).
  5. I drink 2 cups of coffee in the morning, 1 cup of tea in the afternoon, and 1 in the evening.
  6. I was once very tech and code savvy, but now I am just the old fart who is clueless about new tech. My 9 year old now knows more than I do.
  7. I am allergic to chicken, turkey, basically any fowl and white fish. It’s an allergy to the chemical makeup of specific fats. It’s surprising how much chicken products are in foods (broth, fat, etc.). This allergy only began affecting me in my early 20s and it took quite a long and painful while before I self-diagnosed it. I get violent gastrointestinal pains which worsen with every attack, but luckily, I’ve weeded out most everything that triggers this attack. Eating out is a gamble — but luckily, I love cooking! I also cannot eat anything with processed/synthetic sugar (diet/no sugar foods, gum, etc.) as that also gives me gastrointestinal pain.
  8. I love architecture. I would have pursued that field if the engineering aspect didn’t scare me away.
  9. I cross my sevens and z’s.
  10. I stay barefoot (indoors) year-round.
  11. I am loathe to the Twilight and 50 Shades following.

I hope that was a little interesting!
Now, on to Nicole’s questions; these are a bit tough!

If you could choose one author to be your best friend (we’re talking giggling at sleepovers and having brunch on Sundays to talk about the latest tabloids kind of best friend), who would you choose and why?
An author as a best friend? Unfortunately, my pick is deceased. But I think Hunter S would have been an obscenely memorable friend. If you know me, you know that I consider him one of the most brilliant writers of our time.

58ntk7j

Yes, Avenged stole that line from Hunter S. I wonder if they got permission?

Favorite kind of cheese?
Oh my. Can I just lay out a top 5? Swiss (imported — the stinkier and sour-er, the better). Feta. Mozzarella. Pecorino. Bleu. Neufchatel. I never said I was good at math. Cottage cheese is the only cheese I’ll pass on.

This is a choose-your-own-adventure kind of question. Path A: What book series shoulddinotopia-episode-7a be adapted into a video game and why (I’m thinking a la Witcher here)? Path B: If you don’t play video games and thus can’t travel down Path A, please tell me how you function without such soul-sucking enjoyment in your life?
This is a fantastic question! And of course, my quick response would be Dinotopia. On second thought, though I love the books, it would probably wind up being a video game much like Myst. *shudder* So on second thought, I really enjoyed Rothfuss’ Name of the Wind. Schools of Magic in a dark setting, not like HP? Cities on cliffs and haunted taverns? Why not?

If it were my birthday and you were buying me a puppy, what kind of puppy would you get me (pictures preferred)?
Aw, it would depend on what you prefer! Small, medium, or large? I would totally get you a Papillon for the small breed, a Brittany Spaniel for the medium breed, and a Belgian Sheepdog/King Shepherd for the large breed.

What are you most excited about writing wise right now?
Ah. As mentioned before, my writing is currently facing the doldrums of uninspiration. I am excited about getting back into the groove of writing, though, wherever that groove may be! Hopefully, this will be sooner rather than later.

What is the plot of the ultimate dream story you want to write (or have written or are too afraid to write)?
Yes! I have a plot that has been “in the works” for nearly ten years now. It’s been started about 4-5 times now, has undergone 4-5 plot changes, and it’s basically a story about how an alternate dimension/entity manipulates reality. It’s a theme that I’ve noticed in many of my stories. I loathed my MC for a long time, cussed at him for being so damn lame, then transformed him to becoming somewhat up to his role. But he’s still not up to par.

How do you plan to better the world?
By being kind and honest. I’m not so ambitious as to lead or organize any kind of “movement” per se, but I think by encouraging, supporting, and loving those I know, I can better those around me, and in turn, they may better those they know, too. I like subtleties.

What “rule” do you break in writing (purposefully or otherwise)?
Erm… I make up words? Sometimes. I’m a bit of a rule-follower, at least when it comes to grammar — I guess not so much in vocabulary (note: “uninspiration,” or “sour-er”).

Which fictional characters make you question whether you’re actually fictosexual, i.e., who can I swoon over? (Also, adapted this one from R.K. and I don’t apologize for it).
Fictosexual, you say? This is a tough one. I can’t say I’ve ever swooned over a fictional character before. The closest a character ever came to me getting “emotionally involved” with would be Le Stat, at least in the beginning of the series. By book 3, I was merely amused by his antics.

What fictional language do you wish was actually commonplace?
The closest fictional language that mildly interested me would be Tolkien’s elvish, as far as I can think of. Liv Tyler made it sound magical. I will say that I wish Latin was more of a common language than a dead one though!

lurtz-lord-of-the-rings-14782298-500-362

I’m thinking that his breath alone would do me in. I wouldn’t even have a chance to run.

Lurtz (see below if you’re not on a first name basis) is about to kill you. What do you do?
Oh dear. I’m not a fighter!! So I would obviously run away in something of an erratic manner. Or… yeah, I would just run like the coward I am!

Now, eleven questions to the lovely tagged folks? I’ll tag those of you who are interested in this questionnaire! I’ll make them simple, because I’m just nosey like that.

1. Would you rather win $10 million, or get a check for $1,000 a week until you kick the bucket? Winning either is guaranteed.
2. Country living, or city living?
3. What is blasting out of your car stereo when you’re driving down the highway? Or, if you don’t drive, what type of music is ringing in your ears on a good day?
4. Do you play any musical instruments?
5. Do you have any siblings? Has that positively or negatively affected your perspective on relationships?
6. Are we an early-to-bed-early-to-rise person, or a go-to-bed-at-dawn-because-I-have-a-lot-of-stuff-to-do person?
7. What is your favorite video game? One that you can play over and over and it’s fun every single time? Or are those days over for you like they are for me -.-
8. Do you like seafood?
9. Truthfully: did you enjoy English class before the age of fifteen? Did you even like school back then?
10. Have you tried writing in the morning versus writing at night experiment, and what were your results? When do you feel most inspired?
11. What is your zodiac sign?

You can reply in the comments, or make a post, or just say nothing at all! Either way, I’m still here.

  1. I think I’d also run away from Lurtz. I can’t see myself being brave in an instance like that… so I’d run with you! *lol*

Loved Nicole’s questions in general. They might have been tough, but from a reader’s perspective they were fun and unique, and so were your answers. Also…. MMMMMMM CHEEEEESE.

Sorry to hear that writing’s been a bumpy road for you lately, btw. Those periods are always temporary, though. Just keep dabbling in it, and sooner or later you’ll find your groove again.

OK, now to answer your questions:

    1. If I’m still getting my day-job paycheck, I think I’d actually take the $1,000 per week check. Only because I’m afraid I’d waste the $10 million if I got it all at once…

    2. No surburban living? :/ I’ll go with country then. I don’t mind visiting cities, but I could never live in one.

    3. Right now, I’m rotating between three very different music albums: Marcela Bovio’s Unprecedented (vocals and string quartet), Foy Vance’s The Wild Swan (singer-songwriter folk pop-rock), and Epica’s The Holographic Principle (symphonic metal). The last one in particular has been my “stereo-blaster” of choice during my evening commutes. 🙂

    4. Sadly, no, I don’t play any instruments. But I wish I did!

    5. I have a brother who is 5 years younger than me. Can’t say whether it has positively or negatively influenced my perspective on relationships, though. Sometimes we get along. Sometimes we don’t….

    6. Early to bed and early to rise!

    7. I’ve never been much of a gamer. But I loved the Myst series when I was younger for its music, stunning graphics, and world-building.

    8. Yes! Though I’m very picky about the seafood I eat. I like salmon, cod, haddock, crab cakes, scallops, shrimp… and that’s it. O_O And I don’t eat fried seafood. It had to be baked, broiled, or pan-seared.

    9. I did like English class when I was in school. My only complaint was I wasn’t always interested in the books they assigned us. As for school in general, I did well and liked several of my classes and teachers, but not the social aspects of high school.

    10. I’ve gotten used to writing in the morning, afternoon, and evening. So I don’t really have a time of day when my inspiration is strongest… Though not first thing in the morning. I need some time to wake up first.

    11. Virgo!

    • Thank you so much for your encouragement! With everyone getting excited for nano, I’m hoping some of those writerly vibes will rub off on me, too. I can feel myself writing, but by the end of the day… well, you know how it goes.

      Yay, I loved your answers!!

And yes, I guess suburbia fell into the country category. But you’re right, they are totally different lifestyles as I’ve tried the country living… and while it was certainly one of my visually favorite memories, I really am more comfortable back in suburbia 🙂

A Myst lover, very cool! Have you read the (fan?) books based on that story? I have a copy of one, I think it’s a series, but being that I’m one of those who got utterly frustrated by the puzzles, I felt like I couldn’t properly enjoy the book. A friend of mine read them though, and she loved them! You can have my copy 😀 It’s a lovely-looking book!

I wasn’t crazy about the books they made us read in English class, either. I was and am still under the impression that the “lower levels” read cooler books than the level I was in. 1984, Childhood’s End, Of Mice and Men; I mean come on, why did I get stuck with I-can’t-even-remember-now books?

The social aspect was also a bummer for me. I could’ve definitely done without, and not staying homeschooled into 12th grade was a bad decision on my part, I know now.

If you could, what instrument would you want to be super duper good at? Vocals included — because Sara as a rockstar would be amazing!

      • Yeah… I know the feeling. But the way I’ve learned to look at it is, if I don’t fit in time after work for the book, it won’t get done. Period. And forcing myself to squeeze in that 60 to 90 minutes each night has really helped. Otherwise, I’d feel lost, because that’s how I always feel if I go too long without writing.

The point is, don’t give up, Jess. And don’t let yourself go too long without writing, either. Even if you give yourself a tiny window of time to start with, it will help in the long run.

Fan-based books on the Myst series?? They exist?! :O The only such books I have are the strategy guides for the first three games (because like you, I couldn’t solve most of the puzzles on my own, either). The Myst and Riven guides were actually pretty cool – because their first halves were actually written as stories of a young man (same one in each, I think) traveling between all the ages and figuring out the puzzles as well as the “bigger picture” of each game. But I’m assuming the Myst books you were talking about are different…?

“If you could, what instrument would you want to be super duper good at? Vocals included — because Sara as a rockstar would be amazing!”

Hey, who told you that was my super-secret dream? 😉 I’d actually go with vocals, because it would also mean I could write my own lyrics. But I’m not very confident about my singing voice, unfortunately. My next choice would be keyboard / piano.

        • Thank you for that advice. I’ve been editing here and there, and have been journaling consistently, but it’s the fiction-writing that has been lacking. And yes, it’s driving me crazy. Especially with all the nanowrimo enthusiasm going around! I need that burst of inspiration, and I just KNOW it’s right there under the surface… I just can’t seem to break the ice to get to it! I’ve 2-3 stories in the works right now, so it’s not as if the characters aren’t there giving me the evil eye… I’m going to go through my story research tomorrow and hope it gives me that devil-may-care spark again.

Here’s the first of the series: https://www.amazon.com/dp/0786881887/ref=cm_sw_r_tw_dp_x_GIceybB7P624V Yes, check it out! I think you’d enjoy them! And I absolutely love strategy guides, they transport me right back to the game without having to actually play them. My latest “video” binge was watching all the cust scenes from FFXII and 6+ hours later (okay, 2 nights later), I felt exhausted. But in a good way 🙂 I wish writing a story were that easy with such epic results!

        • Oooh, there’s an omnibus edition containing all three! I might have to look into that. Thanks!

Well, you’ve got a plan. As long as you keep showing up, the muse should soon follow. You can get through this. *hugs*

        • Of course! I’m so glad I could open those series up for you! The books are gorgeous, so for that fact alone, you won’t regret it 😉

Thank you always for your support Sara ❤ ❤

  2. Nice Liebster entry, glad I caught it on my feed! Sorry to hear you’re dealing with some muse-blockage, but it’s a good bet that you’ll find inspiration from the NaNo flurries in the coming month.

Hunter S is interesting, but I’m used to him through the movie Fear & Loathing, I should read some of his work; any suggestions?

And of course, I’ll take a crack at those questions~

    1. I’d rather win $10 million and do mysterious things with that money~
    2. I used to be on the fence when it came to country vs. city living, but right now, I’m definitely resonant with city living and the hustle-n-bustle energy of the populations living within an urban environment.
    3. All kinds of music. When I drive, I’m relegated to CDs, and I only have a few of those, so usually Wanda Jackson, Erykah Badu, Grimes, or Simply Stoopid; lol.
    4. I play piano and am learning guitar.
    5. I have two younger siblings and it’s been both positive and negative in effect.
    6. Lately, I switch between going to bed early and waking early and staying up til dawn and then sleeping. Whatever is needed or wanted at that moment.
    7. Favorite video game… Hmm, the closest in most recent years would probably be Dragon Age: Origins, lol. Though I also really like a game called Verde Station and have played that multiple times for the fun of it.
    8. I like seafood in moderation.
    9. I did not enjoy English class after the age of fifteen, though I did before then. The older I got, the more disillusioned I felt towards classes and school in general. For me, later-year english courses always felt like busy-work, not actual development of skill. I did learn quite a bit about putting essays together though, so it was good I still participated.
    10. I have tried writing during different times of the day, as well as the night, and noticed that it isn’t so much the time of day (or hour upon waking) that influences my personal inspiration in writing – but the weather outside. I feel most inspired when there are extremes in weather; like a thunderstorm or bright sun.
    11. Sagittarius. :3

    • Thank you for dropping by, long time no see! I hope you’re doing well.

Hunter S is very unique, I would recommend two of his more popular stories to read: Fear and Loathing, and the Rum Diaries. They’re both very entertaining — his writing style by itself is very entertaining, even if his opinions and cynicism are contrary.

You are so very correct about the upcoming Nano to be inspiring! I /was/ gung-ho for it last night, even contemplating actually doing nano, but today, now I’m not so sure. I mean, there’s less than 24 hours before it begins, and I was fully-intentioned on not participating in nano this year… Figures, right? Life is strange. We shall see. Thank you for your encouragement!

Can’t say I’ve heard of Verde Station, I’m going to have to check that out after my reply.

I definitely relate with your feelings about English class — it was enjoyable when learning about grammar and outlining and topics like such, but once high school began, it all went downhill. Even the early college classes felt like busywork, too. Too formulaic to be anything but interesting. Maybe we just had dull professors?

Very interesting that the weather plays such a big role in your writing! I enjoy the weather too, and a dreary day definitely does dampen the mood or make me anxious, but if the need/want to write is there, I’ll write. Do seasons put you in particular moods as well?

      • There, I saved those two Hunter S titles to my Scribd library, that should remind me to get to it at some time. Thanks for the suggestions. :3
When it comes to NaNo, it’s always okay to jump in whenever too. Though, I get the structure of wanting to start on the 1st and end on the 30th, makes it feel like a real challenge – least to me. I’m not anywhere closer to deciding whether I’m going to participate or not either xD But there’s still about 12 hours left until midnight here. Pleeeenty of time to decide! 😛
Maybe we did just have dull professors, I can’t think of any English teacher that particularly stuck out to me, so I suppose that could be, lol.
As for the weather thing, I’ve noticed it a lot in the past year. Seasons definitely put me in particular moods in areas that deal with actual winter/summer changes, though I’ll write during any season. Hmmm, I should keep a closer observance on that one!
